100% renewable petrol: BMW, Toyota, Bosch and Repsol launch a pilot project

Travelling in cars powered by 100% renewable petrol, using models already on the market rather than modified vehicles. This is the pilot project launched by the BMW Group, Toyota Motor Europe, Repsol and Bosch. The six-month initiative, which began in July 2026, involves the use of Toyota and BMW vehicles running on Nexa 95, Repsol’s 100% renewable petrol, supported by Bosch’s digital fuel tracking system. The aim is to provide concrete evidence that renewable fuels can be implemented on a large scale today, using existing vehicles, existing refuelling infrastructure and digital certification technologies.

The initiative involves the use of a fleet of around 20 Toyota and BMW vehicles, powered by Repsol’s 100% renewable petrol (Nexa 95) and supported by Bosch’s advanced digital fuel tracking technology. The project, which began in early July, will demonstrate the real-world potential of vehicles running exclusively on eligible fuels (Veef). The project aims to provide concrete, real-world evidence that vehicles running exclusively on eligible fuels can be effectively deployed on a large scale, supporting Europe’s transition towards the decarbonisation of mobility through a complementary and technology-neutral approach.

The project has three main objectives, starting with the availability of renewable petrol on the market thanks to Repsol’s infrastructure; Repsol is currently the only supplier of 100% renewable petrol at public service stations in Spain. The second is the development of digital tracking and certification technologies, enabled by Bosch’s ‘Digital Fuel Twin’ system, which certifies the use of renewable fuel throughout its entire life cycle. The third is the operational roll-out of Veef fleets, demonstrating that existing vehicles can already run on 100% renewable fuels using the existing infrastructure

Unlike solutions that require new vehicle technologies or infrastructure investment, the pilot project uses existing Toyota and Lexus cars provided by Toyota, as well as vehicles from the BMW fleet. The project highlights the immediate scalability of renewable fuels as a solution for the decarbonisation of road transport compared with fossil fuels, whilst remaining fully compatible with current petrol engines and existing infrastructure. With EU policies currently focused predominantly on electrification, the project aims to demonstrate that renewable fuels can play a complementary and scalable role in reducing CO₂ emissions.
