There are 15,221 places available for medical specialisations

The number of postgraduate training places for young doctors is increasing, albeit only slightly. This has been confirmed by the Ministry of University and Research (MUR). The Minister for Universities and Research, Anna Maria Bernini, has signed the decree allocating the available places for the 2025/2026 academic year amongst accredited medical specialisation schools, totalling 15,221 training contracts (15,088 in the previous academic year). Of these, 14,631 are state-funded, 148 more than last year.

In addition to state funding, there are 564 contracts funded by the regions and a further 26 supported by public and private bodies. There are also 282 places reserved for the categories specified by law, including military medical staff and staff of the National Health Service. This brings the total to 15,503 places, which is 1.4 per cent more than the 15,283 available for the 2024/25 academic year.

The specialist training network is also expanding: compared with last year, 36 new specialist schools have been accredited, which will be eligible for contracts funded by the state. This development was also highlighted by Minister Bernini when she said that the increase in state-funded contracts and the accreditation of 36 new schools are moving precisely in this direction: ‘Strengthening specialist training means strengthening our National Health Service’.

By logging into the dedicated platform, doctors on the ranking list will have until 12 noon on Tuesday 22 September 2026 to specify the type and location of the school via their personal account on the Universitaly portal.

Placement results will be published on Thursday 24 September, and students will be able to enrol at their allocated school until Friday 2 October.
