He died at the age of 28 Sammy Basso, an Italian progeria patient who had made the world aware of the rare disease from which he suffered and which causes premature ageing of cells and the body but not of the brain.

Giving the news, with a post on Fb, was the Italian Progeria Association Sammy Basso onlus: 'On 5 October 2024, today our light, our guide, has gone out,' the post reads. 'Sammy taught us that although life's obstacles may sometimes seem insurmountable, it is worth living it to the full'. This was the message, posted on Instagram, with which Sammy Basso's family and friends wanted to remember him.

Born in 1995 in Schio, he was diagnosed with Hutchinson-Gilford progeria when he was two years and a few months old. Basso, together with his parents, founded the Italian Sammy Basso Progeria Association, which he witnessed from the age of ten. As underlined on the association's website, Sammy Basso was 'known for his many television appearances and interviews about the association's activities and about his illness' and 'became particularly well known in Italy after the airing of the National Geographic docu-film entitled "Sammy's Journey", which recounts his journey along Route 66, in the USA, from Chicago to Los Angeles, with his parents and one of his best friends, Riccardo'.

Sickness in the restaurant

Sammy Basso died late yesterday evening after being taken ill suddenly while having dinner with family and friends at Villa Razzolini Loredan in Asolo (Treviso). A Suem 118 ambulance arrived on the scene and doctors tried to resuscitate him, but their attempt was in vain.

From Vicenza, he was born on 1 December 1995 in Thiene and lived in Tezze sul Brenta. He had only returned a few weeks ago from a trip to China.

The Studies

In 2018, he had graduated from the University of Padua with a degree in Natural Sciences, with a thesis aimed at demonstrating the possibility of curing progeria through genetic engineering. The following year he was appointed, by motu proprio of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. In 2021, he specialised in Molecular Biology, graduating from the University of Padua with a thesis aimed at clarifying the correlation between progeria and inflammation.

Meloni: extraordinary example of courage

"Sammy Basso was an extraordinary example of courage, faith and positivity. He faced every challenge with a smile, proving that strength of spirit can overcome any obstacle. His commitment to progeria research and his ability to inspire others will forever remain a role model. Sammy Basso showed us all what it means to live with passion and determination, never losing the joy and the will to fight. You will continue to be a light that shines in the hearts of us all. To God Sammy'. Premier Giorgia Meloni wrote this on X.

Locatelli: Sammy Basso an example of strength and hope

"An affectionate and moving thought for Sammy Basso, who has left us at only 28 years of age. Thanks to his courage and determination, he made the world aware of progeria and became an example of strength and hope. His commitment to research and his testimony will forever remain a precious heritage for all of us'. Disability Minister Alessandra Locatelli wrote this on Facebook.
