The French theatre actor Arnaud Denis, who was severely disabled following hernia mesh surgery, underwent euthanasia in Belgium at the age of 43 to put an end to his suffering, his lawyer has announced. Denis set up a group, “French Victims of Hernia Implants”, which has gathered hundreds of testimonies on social media from people sharing their sense of resignation in the face of the side effects associated with hernia implants.
The actor and director had undergone surgery for an inguinal hernia in July 2023, during which a polypropylene prosthesis was implanted. This marked the beginning of a period of terrible suffering: “Arnaud Denis’s decision,” said his lawyer, “was taken in consultation with three doctors in Namur, Belgium. His body could no longer support him. He had lost control of it. Arnaud Denis’s death was a consequence of the intense pain he had been suffering for many months.”
The lawyer, Philippe Courtois, added that he had been “instructed” by Denis to “personally pursue his case and support his family”. The lawyer announced that he had already taken steps to challenge the decision to dismiss Denis’s complaint against persons unknown for negligent injury in relation to the operation he underwent in 2023.
