In the referendums of 8 and 9 June voters who are away from their municipality of residence for study, work or care reasons will be able to vote in their temporary domicile. A voting method provided for on an experimental basis by Decree Law 27/2025.
Applications by 4 May
The application for off-site voting must be submitted by 4 May (this is the 35th day before the polling date) and can be revoked by 14 May (the 25th day before the polling date).
The Procedure
.In order to vote away from home, voters must submit an application to the municipality of temporary residence. The application may be submitted in person or by another person delegated or electronically. It is necessary to enclose a copy of an identity document; a copy of the voter's polling card; a copy of the certification or documentation attesting to the voter's status as an out-of-office voter, i.e. the reasons for study, work or medical treatment for which the voter is temporarily domiciled in a municipality of a province other than that of residence.
The precedent of the European elections 2024
.The possibility for out-of-town students to vote for lists and candidates from their home constituency without having to return to their municipality of residence had been a novelty introduced (again on an experimental basis) for the 2024 European elections. There were 23,000 students who had applied throughout Italy to vote in a polling station other than their place of residence: 91 special polling stations had been set up in the regional capitals (for those outside their constituency). Bologna and Milan were the cities that had the most (8), followed by Turin (7) and Rome (6).
