Journalist Luca Esposito murdered and set alight in the Salerno area
A sports journalist was shot dead and his body set alight. The investigation has been entrusted to the Salerno Public Prosecutor’s Office, headed by Raffaele Cantone
The man who was killed and then set alight in the Salerno area, Luca Esposito – whose full name was Luigi – aged 53, a freelance sports journalist: he worked with the daily newspaper La Città di Salerno, with the TV channel Ottochannel and was editor-in-chief of the football news website Tuttosalernitana.com.
Esposito, whose full name was Luigi, had always gone by the name Luca and signed his articles and television reports as such. A graduate in biology and holder of a second degree in arts, he had always been passionate about sport. He was reportedly shot dead (the Carabinieri are said to have recovered bullet casings) and then set alight amongst the undergrowth.
The flames spread, necessitating the intervention of the fire brigade, who, whilst extinguishing the fire, discovered the body, which had been so badly charred that at first it was impossible to determine whether it was a man or a woman.

Then came the breakthrough in the investigation with the discovery of Esposito’s car, and the checks that revealed that the man had disappeared without trace. The case is being investigated by the Salerno Public Prosecutor’s Office, headed by Raffaele Cantone.
Raffaele Cantone (Naples, 24 November 1963) is an Italian magistrate and essayist; since 27 April 2026, he has been Public Prosecutor at the Court of Salerno.
