A 40 million plan to consolidate and systematise the port of Salerno. And prepare favourable conditions for an increase in traffic, all with economic and employment benefits considered significant for all types of goods.

The Central Tyrrhenian Sea Adsp. gave the go-ahead for the works, with the handover of the consolidation and adaptation of the western side of the Port's Pier 3 Gennaio. These are important interventions for the port whose commercial area extends from the border with the municipality of Vietri sul Mare to the root of Pier 3 Gennaio. The works will affect the part of the port structure mainly used for the activities of embarking, disembarking and handling various goods, as well as being a transit area for quay cranes.

Upstream of the project, the Authority explains, is the need "to allow ships with a larger size and draught to enter, transit and moor safely".

"The design has planned the articulation of the construction phases, the work schedule, and the organisation of the worksite areas," the Adsp report, "in such a way as to minimise interference with port activities. All of this has been done according to criteria of energy and environmental sustainability and efficiency, using where possible materials and techniques with a reduced environmental impact".

The facility is currently used mainly for the activities of loading, unloading and handling of various goods, as well as being a transit area for quay cranes.

"The works as a whole will affect the so-called Guaimario IV," emphasises Giuseppe Grimaldi, secretary general of the AdSP. "It is a 40 million executive project similar to other consolidation activities already carried out for the Trapezio Pier, the Banchina Rossa, the head of the Molo 3 Gennaio and the Molo Manfredi. To the west of Pier 3 Gennaio, vertical bulkheads will be installed consisting of large-diameter tubular metal piles approximately 25 metres long, which make up the load-bearing structural elements, alternating with 'zeta'-shaped metal sheet piles that create the closure between the main elements".

And that's not all: "The new quay bulkhead, tied in at the head with anchor tie rods, will be installed close to the existing 383-metre-long quay, and the gap between the quay and bulkhead will be filled with concrete. For reasons related to the stability of the quays, the activities will have to be carried out from the sea with the help of suitable maritime means," the Authority further explains. A reinforced concrete correa beam will be built on the bulkhead, on which the quay fittings such as mooring bollards, wings and ascent ladders will be installed. The work also includes the formation of a semi-flexible pavement, specifically for port areas, along the entire length of the quay.

The works will be used to fill in the cracks that are present at the foot of the quay and caused by the action of ships' bow and stern thrusters. "The consolidation works at Pier 3 January, like several other interventions underway in the Campania port system, are fundamental for the modernisation of the Port of Salerno," emphasises the president of the AdSP, Andrea Annunziata. "Once again, we have managed to fulfil all the programmes related to the Pnrr investments. The upgrading and consolidation of a strategic pier such as the 3 January will not only ensure greater security for port operations but, thanks to the infrastructural development it will bring about, will also lead to greater employment growth'. This is an important step for the port, which, thanks to its connection with the main "areas of the world", guarantees "multifunctional and fast services" and represents, as they point out at the System Authority, "an important junction of the Motorways of the Sea".
