High energy consumption, rising costs and new regulations that require companies to reduce their environmental impact and make their carbon footprint transparent: the steel industry is among the sectors most exposed to the ecological transition. These pressures are compounded by the growing demand for low-emission steel from large international buyers. In this scenario, technology and innovation become decisive tools to maintain competitiveness and reduce environmental impact.

To meet these challenges, Gap, a Lombardy-based company specialising in providing industrial services for steel mills, has launched Premium Gap, an operating model that integrates energy and environmental auditing, digitisation and process optimisation and compensation. Initial tests have shown how systematic data collection and real-time monitoring make it possible to identify areas of intervention with reductions in both consumption and emissions. "The novelty," explains CEO Eligio Piantoni, "is to connect tools that were hitherto separate, so as to transform data into operational decisions and verifiable results.

The model is designed to be scalable: an SME can start with audits and targeted interventions, while large groups can aim for sustainable transaction plans and offsetting. Collaboration with technology partners and international certification bodies serves to make it replicable and recognised in foreign markets as well. According to Piantoni, 'presenting oneself with a certified sustainability path now means easier access to international tenders, subsidised credit lines and industrial partnerships. The expected effects go beyond the individual plant: reduction of CO₂ emissions, electrification of processes, waste recovery, optimisation of flows, and greater transparency in environmental performance. But the impact also touches the supply chain: 'Premium Gap does not only affect those who use our services,' Piantoni adds, 'but also stimulates suppliers to develop more efficient machinery and low-emission technologies. It is a virtuous circle that calls the entire supply chain to evolve together towards sustainability and efficiency".
