McLaren has unveiled the W1, the highest performing model in its range, just as the orange single-seaters are the cars to beat even in Formula 1. Thirty years after the McLaren F1, the new W1 is not only the most powerful road car ever, it also has much in common as the single-seater that is at the top of the world's top championship in motorsport. Only 399 examples will be produced, all of which have already been pre-ordered, at a price starting at 1.9 million euros, excluding options.
The hybrid powertrain guarantees 2.5 km on electric power.
The starting point is the new V8 twin-turbo hybrid engine with an electric unit powered by a 1.4 kWh battery for a total of 1,241 hp and 1,353 Nm of torque. A system that allows 337 hp to be added to the 904 hp of the V8, but also allows it to travel 2.5 km in electric mode, but it is not a plug-in like the two similarly equipped models, the SF90 Ferrari and the Lamborghini Revuelto. The W1 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 3 seconds for a top speed of 350 km/h. This is performance typically associated with hypercars.
Aboard is accessed through the two scenic doors.
As for the design of the W1, it all starts with the new Aerocell monocoque chassis developed by McLaren. To get on board, the two dramatic wing-opening doors open, while aerodynamics is one of the strong points of the car that has spent 350 hours in the wind tunnel, a development concentrated in the rear wing that improves drag and also increases the car's downforce. An ara flow diverter on the roof also sends the necessary fresh air to the engine compartment.
