A2A, in nine years distributed 8.8 billion to the Milan area
Between suppliers, labour costs and dividends, this is the sustainability balance of the energy group in the metropolitan area
by Cheo Condina
One and a half billion euro distributed across the territory (a figure up by 24%), of which over 1 billion to suppliers (more than half SMEs), 330 million in labour costs and 86 million in dividends. Nearly 900 new hires in the last year, 40% of whom are under 30. Separate waste collection at 62% and zero landfill. Over 560 thousand tonnes of CO2 emissions avoided thanks to waste-to-energy, cogeneration and photovoltaic plants. This is, in a nutshell, the ninth Milan territorial sustainability report of A2A: in as many years the energy group led by Renato Mazzoncini has distributed 8.8 billion euros in this geographical area. A2A thus confirms its commitment to the ecological transition of the Milan Metropolitan City, on whose infrastructures it has invested almost half a billion euros: since 2016, when investments themselves amounted to just 140 million, the total figure is around 2.5 billion. Full satisfaction, in this regard, was expressed by Emmanuel Conte, Councillor for the Budget of the Municipality of Milan, who emphasised - during the event for the presentation of the sustainability report - the importance of having a partner such as A2A in the Municipality's energy transition path and in offering services that are up to the mark in the area: "a fundamental alliance for the city's economic, environmental and social growth".
A more decarbonised and sustainable Milan
"Once again in 2024, A2A's commitment to the sustainable development of the territory was translated into concrete actions, rooted locally and people-oriented - underlined the Chairman of A2A, Roberto Tasca - In the Metropolitan City of Milan we have hired almost 900 new resources in the last year, 40% of which under 30. Sustainability cannot disregard human capital: investing in talent, in their skills and in strengthening the sense of belonging to the group is a fundamental lever. In this direction the second phase of A2A Life Sharing, the shareholder programme that accompanies employees along the company's growth path, sharing the results of the work built together, will start in November. The initiative is in addition to A2A Life Caring, which envisages 120 million euros by 2035 to support the wellbeing of employees' families, with particular attention to the issue of parenthood. We are happy about this'. The CEO Renato Mazzoncini, for his part, noted how "Milan and Lombardy today represent one of the main laboratories of energy transition in Europe". In this context, A2A, 'increasingly proposes an innovative industrial model, as can be seen from the almost 500 million euros of investments made in the Milan area. In 2024 alone the Group generated an economic value of over 1.5 billion euro locally, demonstrating our ability to combine economic growth, employment and sustainable development. A path that is part of a long-term vision aimed at making Milan an increasingly efficient, digital and decarbonised city. A further line of development is represented by data centres, an area on which A2A is concentrating resources and know-how to help make Lombardy a strategic centre also for digital security and economic competitiveness".
Benefits and services on the ground
But how does the mission of sustainability and the green transition translate into the reality of the Milan area, moreover at a time in history when sustainability itself seems to have receded in the rankings of priorities for companies and citizens? For example, A2A sends 100% of the urban waste collected for recovery, a result that entails zero landfill disposal. Milan has thus exceeded 62% separate waste collection, a figure that places it at the top in Europe among metropolises with over one million inhabitants. In 2024, Amsa - a company belonging to the A2A Group - was awarded the management of environmental services in Milan. The new activities include a 40% increase in the frequency of street cleaning and approximately 13,000 more kilometres served per week, as well as a 66% increase in the emptying of street bins.
At the same time, the group is committed to recovering heat from data centres for district heating. Thanks to the collaboration with DBA Group and Retelit, A2A is building a plant that will recover the heat generated by the "Avalon 3" data centre and supply the city's network, serving more than 1,250 extra households a year. And then there are the renewables: after the inauguration of the largest roof-mounted photovoltaic plant in Italia at Rho Fiera, A2A is constructing 10 new photovoltaic plants at the CAP Group's lamination tanks and a ground-mounted plant on an area of around 9 hectares at Linate airport. A photovoltaic plant installed on the roof of the Lacchiarella plant for the treatment and recovery of the organic fraction of waste was started up in January, producing 1.4 GWh of electricity in 2024.
Last but not least, there is the issue of human capital: A2A has over 7,000 employees in its Milan offices, 70% of whom live in the province. Of the almost 900 employees hired in 2024, 40% are under 30 years of age. For its people in 2024, the Group has launched A2A Life Caring, the programme to support parenthood that envisages investments of 120 million euro by 2035, and has recently approved A2A Life Sharing, the widespread shareholding plan that aims to strengthen the sense of belonging and active participation in the company's growth. The company has also joined the Municipality of Milan's "Homes for Workers" project: 30 homes are being renovated with the aim of allocating them to Amsa and Unareti employees at a subsidised rent.
