Countdown to A2A's sale of approximately 490,000 gas redelivery points (in practice meters) to Ascopiave in Lombardy.

A matter of hours and - according to Radiocor - the closing of a 430 million transaction, on which a binding agreement was reached at the end of 2024, will be signed: tomorrow, barring any twists and turns, the official announcement will come.

For the energy group led by Renato Mazzoncini, this means the consolidation of a strategy that has been in place for some time, namely the progressive focus on electrification, energy transition and circularity. Ascopiave, on the other hand - which finances the deal with the sale of the remaining 25% of EstEnergy to Hera (finalised just a few days ago for €234 million) and with new financial debt - thus continues to focus on strictly regulated businesses.

The reorganisation, in particular, envisages the sale by A2A of the shares of a vehicle company owning a business unit comprising a compendium of assets consisting of approximately 490,000 gas distribution redelivery points relating to the Atem in the provinces of Brescia, Cremona, Bergamo, Pavia and Lodi, with a Rab 2023 of 397 million euros and an Ebitda 2023 of 44 million euros.

The operation for A2A comes a few months after the maxi purchase of electricity networks from Enel in Lombardy. This has led to a historic handover for the group controlled by the municipalities of Milan and Brescia: the electricity Rab has in fact overtaken the gas assets. After all, for Ceo Mazzoncini, the renewables-electrification binomial is one of the main pillars of the plan and, in general, of the energy world with a view to the green transition and the reduction of electricity prices in the medium term.

As far as Ascopiave is concerned, the acquisition comes in the wake of a strategy to focus on regulated businesses, although in recent years there has also been room for some small investments in green generation.

Still on the subject of gas networks, the market is looking at the Veneto group among the possible buyers for the pdr that Italgas - due to Antitrust - will have to sell after the merger with 2i Rete Gas. But Ascopiave's debt multiples - all the more so after the transaction with A2A - appear a little 'stretched'.
