Are you fed up with the usual SUV, perhaps a little arrogant in size and visual impact? But the idea of a slightly off-road look still appeals, but do you prefer a compact car with good roominess without overdoing it because you don't have to carry around a baby football team of screaming children? Well, Audi is answering these questions with the A3 allstreet, a new variant of the Ingolstadt-based manufacturer's hatchback that takes the A4 and A6 allroad formula in a smaller format but still in the C segment. In short, the new A3 marries the cross-country concept and embodies it in a saloon with a raised trim and crossover-like bodywork protection that makes it suitable for tackling dirt roads and, above all, urban streets, which are now full of potholes even in big cities like Milan.

The newcomer to the four-ringed brand's premium compacts stands out for its body height increased by 30 mm, of which 15 mm thanks to the larger diameter tyres and another 15 mm provided by the new suspension. Its dimensions remain 'compact': length at 4,353 mm, width at 1,816 mm and height at 1,470 mm, for a wheelbase of 2,629 mm.

The Audi A3 allstreet comes with a diesel engine, namely the 35 Tdi, an inline-four-cylinder engine designed to offer high performance and low fuel consumption. With a displacement of 1,968 cm³ and a compression ratio of 16.2:1, the 35 Tdi offers a direct injection system and a variable geometry turbocharger, capable of delivering a maximum power output of 150 hp (110 kW) at 3,500-4,500 rpm and a maximum torque of 360 Nm at 1,600-3,000 rpm. The four valves per cylinder optimise combustion efficiency, helping to reduce emissions and meeting Euro 6d-ISC-FCM limits.

Thanks to this engine, the Audi A3 allstreet is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.9 seconds and reaching a top speed of 224 km/h. In terms of consumption, in the combined cycle it "drinks" between 4.7 and 5.0 litres per 100 kilometres, with Co2 emissions ranging between 123 and 132 g/km.

Also on offer is a mild hybrid 48 volt 1.5 Tfsi petrol version, again with 150 hp to which 12 hp is added thanks to electrics. Both are mated to the 7-speed S tronic gearbox.

Three trim levels are available. The 'basic' one called Business costs 39,500 euro (9,000 euro more than the Sportback). This is followed by the Business Advanced and the top of the range Identity Contrast which costs 44,500. For this model Audi has also provided a long-term rental formula with a fee of 509 euros per month for 36 months or 45,000 kilometres.

Options include an electric tailgate, tow hitch and a storage package.

The interior features Dab+ digital radio, a 10.1-inch touch display, the Audi virtual cockpit and an inductive charger for smartphones as standard. Compatibility with Apple Car and Android Auto systems is also guaranteed, while Audi's Mmi infotainment system also integrates the Alexa voice assistant. For those who like to listen to music in the car in high quality, the Sonos 3D Premium Sound System is offered as an option for around 500 euros.
