"On the income produced by banks, various and higher taxes are added compared to companies in other economic sectors," says the Abi's deputy director general, Gianfranco Torriero, in a note. This is the first time the association has intervened since the new rumours about a tax on extra profits came out. Torriero emphasises how "a saver who invests in bank shares suffers taxation of more than 50%", and explains how banks are burdened by "Ires (24%), the additional Ires for banks (3.50%), Irap (5.45%, which includes, compared to the ordinary rate, a further higher one for banks) and the flat rate on dividends (26%). For non-financial companies,' Torriero concludes, 'this taxation is still high but 4 percentage points lower.
