The decline in bank robberies continued, falling by 36.3% in one year, from 80 in 2023 to 51 in 2024. The so-called risk index - i.e. the number of robberies per 100 branches - also fell from 0.4 to 0.3. This is what emerged from the survey conducted by Ossif, Abi's Security Research Centre, the results of which were presented today during the Banks and Security 2025 conference, the annual event promoted by Abi, in collaboration with Abi Lab, CertFin and Ossif and organised by AbiEventi, on physical and digital security in the banking, financial and insurance sectors.
Collaboration between banks and law enforcement
."The positive trend that has characterised the phenomenon in recent years is the result of a growing joint commitment between banks and the police. The aim of this shared work has been to promote an increasingly robust security culture, to protect both customers and employees in the sector, in line with the strategic priorities of Abi and the entire banking sector," stressed Abi's Director General, Marco Elio Rottigni, adding that "from 2014 to 2024, robberies at counters fell by 93.6%, a significant result that highlights the effectiveness of the actions taken. In this path, a fundamental role was played by the new Protocol of Understanding between Abi and the Department of Public Security, for the prevention of predatory crimes, which I had the privilege of signing at national level on 11 December, together with the Deputy Director General of Public Security and Central Director of the Criminal Police, Prefect Raffaele Grassi, whom I thank for his contribution".
Hitches down in 13 regions
.Ossif data show that, in 2024, robberies decreased in 13 regions: Campania (from 9 to 7), Emilia-Romagna (from 8 to 4), Lazio (from 7 to 4), Lombardia (from 19 to 9 robberies), Piemonte (from 7 to 2), Sicilia (from 14 to 10), Toscana (from 5 to 2), Umbria (from 3 to 2), and Abruzzo, Basilicata, Calabria, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Valle d'Aosta where there were no events (up from 1 in the previous year). There were also no robberies in Molise (as in 2023) and a stable situation in Liguria (only 1 robbery).
Increases occurred instead in Marche and b(with 1 robbery from 0), Puglia and Veneto (with 3 robberies from 1) and Trentino-Altro Adige (with 2 robberies from 0). In addition, Italian banks invest more than EUR 400 million each year in making their branches even more protected and secure and in cash handling (processing and transporting valuables).
