Aeroporti di Roma has opened ‘Open’, a facility that will accommodate up to 600 people and serve as the headquarters for a number of airlines (including Ita Airways)
Experts in the aviation sector say that the airports of the future will increasingly resemble small smart cities, offering a wide range of integrated services and technologies, from environmental sustainability to biometrics, from robotics to high-speed rail links. This transformation will not only improve efficiency and the travel experience, but will also turn airports into hubs for innovation and sustainable development. Aeroporti di Roma (ADR), a company within the Mundys Group, has long been following this path.
Adr has opened Open, a state-of-the-art business centre situated opposite Terminal 1 at Fiumicino, in the heart of the airport. The building, constructed between January 2024 and April 2026, can accommodate up to 600 people across 70 offices and 35 meeting rooms. Open will become the headquarters for numerous airlines (including ITA Airways, Emirates, American Airlines, Alaska Air, Delta and Air Canada), as well as ground handling and car hire companies operating at Fiumicino.
Designed by Adr Ingegneria and Adr Infrastrutture in accordance with the most advanced criteria of sustainability and architectural innovation, the business centre was built using materials with a low environmental impact, including sloping façades, specifically designed to limit the building’s overheating and improve indoor comfort. In line with the sustainability strategy of Mundys and Adr, Open also features a rooftop photovoltaic system with a capacity of approximately 67 kWp (kilowatts peak).
Alessandro Benetton, chairman of Mundys, who was present at the facility’s opening, explains: “The opening of Open marks another step in Fiumicino’s development. Through tenacity and creativity, ADR has succeeded in transforming the capital’s hub into the best airport in Europe. ADR and Mundys are committed every day to making this airport increasingly efficient and central to the economy of the local area and our country. The results achieved by ADR in recent years can only be attained through dialogue with all stakeholders and by keeping a clear vision of the path we intend to follow.”
Benetton then broadens his perspective: ‘It was in this spirit that I acted when, in 2022 – at a very difficult time for our group – I accepted my family’s request to lead Edizione. Over the past four years, we have completely transformed the group. We have replaced 80 per cent of the management team and overhauled 75 per cent of our business portfolio; we have created Mundys, which is internationally recognised as a leader in sustainable infrastructure management. We have accelerated our efforts to promote young people and women. Today, across our entire group of 100,000 employees, 50 per cent are women and more than a third are under 30. But our drive for change does not stop there. We are already working on the 2027–2030 strategic plan, in which Adr will play an important role.”
