Satisfied passengers departing from Fiumicino Airport where, from today, as in all airports equipped with the latest generation of scanners, it is possible to carry containers of liquids larger than 100 millilitres in hand luggage. At the capital's airport, as announced by Adr, the company that manages Rome's airports, it is possible to pass through security controls with liquids in hand luggage in containers of up to 2 litres each.
How it works at Fiumicino Airport
.The limit of 100 ml per container remains, however, for flights to the USA and Israel. The OK came, as is known, in recent days from the European Civil Aviation Conference (Ecac), which gave a positive opinion on the updated algorithm of machines capable of detecting hazardous substances without having to separate or remove liquids from baggage. In Italy, these machines have been installed at Milan Malpensa and Linate, Rome Fiumicino, Bergamo (since November), Bologna, and Turin: it is precisely in these airports that departing passengers once again benefit from EU approval.
Passengers satisfied with the new rules
.Many passengers, intercepted this morning by the Ansa agency at Fiumicino airport, are already aware of the new provision, while for the others the airport staff is informing them before the security checks, thus before they get rid of the bottles or their contents. "We learned of the news this morning: a measure that marks a positive step," emphasises a couple of passengers on their way to the US on business, "Along with not having to take their laptops out of their backpacks, and now also their liquids, safely, boarding operations are facilitated and speeded up. For frequent travellers like us, this is undoubtedly a great advantage'.
Others learned of the change once they arrived at the airport. "I did not know about the new measure, but I consider it positive, even for those who, like me, travel occasionally and are not so practical: they will find it less difficult to pass through the gates," explains a young traveller. "I am absolutely delighted with this novelty," says a lady, "also because it was an inconvenience before to be forced, for example, to throw away water and drinks before entering, and then to buy them again inside.
The carriage of electrical equipment in hand luggage
.Remaining at Fiumicino, the carriage of electrical and electronic devices (laptops, tablets, etc.) in hand luggage continues to be permitted, without the need to remove them from hand luggage. The security screening procedures for LAGs (Liquids, Aerosols and Gels) remain unchanged when traditional X-ray machines are used - i.e., as mentioned, at Fiumicino, on flights bound for the USA or Israel - which provide for the possibility of carrying in hand luggage containers of liquids with a maximum capacity of 100ml to be placed in a re-sealable transparent plastic bag of a maximum capacity of 1 litre (one per passenger) to be presented, separately from the hand luggage, during screening operations.
