Against the heat without splits, new technologies for intelligent cooling

From misting (which also drives away insects and mosquitoes) to shading: thanks also to heat-reducing tech systems and building materials, cooling solutions are multiplying. That don't mess up electricity and utility bills

The coolness is immediately ready, outside and inside the home, it costs and consumes much less than an air-conditioning system, plus it destroys mosquitoes and dust without any chemicals, and then it is truly green. It is passive cooling, i.e. the use of ancient techniques but revisited with new smart technologies made in Italy. The first and most important step is nebulisation and then smart shading. Misting has been successfully used for years and years outdoors, even in the sun, on verandas and under parasols, in open-air bars and restaurants, in swimming pools and anywhere where the heat needs to be reduced by several degrees. It is also installed in closed industrial and commercial spaces. And it is based on a precise physical principle: to reduce the heat before it enters the home through walls, doors and windows. Which means, in practice, spending much less and polluting almost nothing compared to air conditioning.

It is a system that never goes haywire, it is always ready, requiring only water and an electrical outlet. Through special nozzles installed along a duct, 5-2 micron microbubbles generated by an electric pump are emitted at high pressure. A very cold cloud is created in the air (it is the pressure that cools), which, as it evaporates through heat, immediately lowers the temperature. In order to have a well-functioning system, it is necessary to have a technician specialised in this field who can precisely calculate the dimensions of the space to be treated and the environmental conditions in order to create a tailor-made system. And only if it is tailor-made is it possible to calculate exactly the operating times, the power of the pressure, the extent and direction of the jets. As for maintenance, unlike air conditioning, it is very simple, and definitely inexpensive. There is no need to buy ready-made devices or systems online; they will never be able to provide constant, real cooling. They all create areas of unhealthy stagnation and dripping.

Inside yes, but for large spaces

Evaporation almost completely nullifies the presence of water molecules, but within a small room, moisture may be created, which is why technicians only recommend this technique for closed rooms if they are particularly large. Consequently, only, for example, in a large loft could it be installed with excellent results. Nebulisation cannot replace air conditioning in large, hot flats exposed to the sun, but it can certainly reduce the number and power of air conditioning units as it reduces the external heat. Which, thanks to innovation in shading, can be further reduced by creating areas protected from solar radiation and heating with bioclimatic pergolas. These are roofs that, unlike pergolas, consist of aluminium louvres that can be adjusted by hand or by remote control. This makes it possible to regulate light, promote natural air circulation and, above all, screen UV and heat very well. The most efficient are pergolas leaning against the wall of the house, which offer considerable energy savings, saving on the cost of air conditioning. They are available in the most diverse sizes, colours, materials and shapes, so that they can shade any surface even on irregularly shaped terraces and balconies. It is important to know that no municipal permits or authorisations are required, as they are removable structures. However, it is advisable to inquire at the technical office of the municipality or to rely on the installer who will carry out the work and who usually knows the rules of the local building regulations. As for costs, a quick comparison highlights the advantage of passive cooling. For a domestic air conditioning system, each split costs from EUR 500 (per room), then add the cost of installation and maintenance (including filters, labour, etc.). For underfloor systems, each split air conditioner starts at 1,300 euros (per room) with very high installation and maintenance charges. A misting system for a space of 30-40 square metres costs from 1,200 euros, including installation. The removable version with lighting just over 1,300-1,500.
