The University of Turin and Nanyang Technological University-Ntu in Singapore have signed a cooperation agreement whereby the two universities will offer students the opportunity to undertake four doctoral programmes under joint supervision. The four doctoral programmes are in Biological Sciences and Applied Biotechnologies, Chemical and Materials Sciences, Earth Science and Physics.
L’intesa
The agreement was signed by UK Rector Stefano Geuna and Ntu Vice-President Christian Wolfrum at the residence of the Italian Ambassador to Singapore Dante Brandi, in the presence of Deputy Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy, Valentino Valentini. It is part of an official visit of the Italian government to Singapore. Nanyang Technological University is now ranked 12th in the Qs World University Ranking, heir to the original Nanyang University founded in 1955, the first Chinese university outside China. It has 38,000 students, and almost 8,000 researchers and administrative staff.
The objectives
.'I am particularly pleased,' says Geuna, 'with this important result, which comes just a few days before the end of my term as rector. Over the past few years, I have firmly believed that it was necessary to invest in a greater international openness of our university and in providing new opportunities for our students to acquire the tools to face the challenges of globalisation. I am sure that this collaboration will be a harbinger of further developments in Singapore, a country of great effervescence in terms of research and technology.
The partnership already on its feet
.UniTo and Nus are already partners in the Signify project for the digitisation of botanical specimens brought to Italy by naturalist expeditions in the late 19th century. This agreement was signed in 2024 as part of the initiatives promoted by the Italian Embassy on the occasion of the arrival of the Amerigo Vespucci school ship at the port of Singapore.
