Although the average age of those in the field in Italy is around 54, there is no shortage of young people who want to devote themselves to agriculture, a sector that is the basis of national food exports and profoundly dynamic, capable of combining traditions and new technologies, such as drones or big data. And proof of the great attractiveness of agriculture is offered by the winners of Oscar Green, the agricultural innovation award promoted by Coldiretti Giovani Impresa, now in its 18th edition, which aims to promote healthy agriculture in the country by giving space to the many innovative ideas of young farmers.
On the podium
.During the final, held in Rovigo in mid-October at the Teatro Sociale, the overall prize of the regional Oscar Green, which is worth the final in Rome, was awarded to Johnny Moretto from Crocetta del Montello in Treviso. Born in 1996, Moretto is the head of the Every Drop of Water Has a Value project; the name is rather eloquent, since his is the only farm to boast an aquaponics system in the Veneto region. Aquaponics is an ancient practice, widespread in ancient China and pre-Columbian America, but today it has a hi-tech heart and combines hydroponics and aquaculture, the latter as a source of nutrients to produce vegetables, herbs and fruit.
The fish in fact produce waste substances that are invaluable for feeding the plants, which in turn purify the water for the fish, ensuring high water savings and minimal use of nutrients from outside. This is true sustainability, indeed, true circular economy, the future of food production. Moretto's plant is also energy- and water-independent, and because it is able to maintain constant internal environmental characteristics, it can even adjust seasonality according to commercial priorities and tastes.
In the 'It's still Oscar Green' category, aimed at companies that have participated in previous editions and further developed their innovative idea, Ilaria Turri from Rovigo, the under-40 owner of the Corte Burchio farm and creator of the innovative Dulcis ... infusion, an instant drink based on mixed-flower honey and chamomile.
The achievements of the two award-winners confirm the agricultural excellence of Veneto, one of the strongest Italian regions in the primary and food sectors. According to Ettore Prandini, national president of Coldiretti, 'Veneto is an extraordinary region in terms of entrepreneurial ability in the agri-food sector. Oscar Green is a fundamental opportunity for young people who represent precisely the distinctiveness and values of local agriculture'.
