Understanding artificial intelligence is no longer a skill reserved for those who work in the technology sector: it is a transversal skill, increasingly in demand for those who are already in the working world and want to update their skills and for those who are training to enter it. To meet this need, the University of Pisa is offering three new free online courses dedicated to responsible AI, accessible to all on the national Edvance platform and usable individually or as an integrated course within the "Responsible Artificial Intelligence" series.

The three courses

The three courses address three pillars of the conscious use of artificial intelligence. "Privacy in big data and AI", held by Professor Anna Monreale, Associate Professor of Computer Science, addresses the issue of data protection in the digital age, exploring the challenges that arise when large amounts of information are processed by intelligent systems. "Fairness in AI", curated by Professor Salvatore Ruggieri, Full Professor of Computer Science, teaches how to identify, measure and prevent different types of bias in data and artificial intelligence models, showing how responsible AI design is indispensable in sectors with a high social impact. Finally, the course 'Explainable Artificial Intelligence', held by Professor Riccardo Guidotti, Associate Professor of Computer Science, guides towards understandable and reliable artificial intelligence, providing the tools to interpret and explain the decisions taken by opaque models.

Department of Computer Science

All three lecturers belong to the Department of Computer Science at the University of Pisa and share internationally renowned research backgrounds on the key topics of responsible AI, with publications in the most authoritative scientific journals in the field and participation in European and national research projects dedicated to the responsible use of artificial intelligence.
"With this series, we want to offer everyone a set of tools to understand what happens when an artificial intelligence system analyses data and makes decisions that affect us," explains Professor Gian-Luigi Ferrari, contact person for the University of Pisa for the production of MOOCs at Edvance. "Data protection, fairness and transparency are not topics reserved for specialists: they concern the way artificial intelligence systems operate, learn and produce concrete effects in society. This is why it is crucial to develop greater awareness: understanding how these systems work, what data they use and what limitations they present is the first step towards exercising informed and responsible control. These are therefore digital citizenship skills essential for finding one's way in a world where artificial intelligence, through its algorithmic mechanisms, is already part of everyday life. With Edvance we make them accessible to anyone, free of charge and with the quality of university education'.

With this in mind, the series will be enriched in the coming weeks with new courses dedicated in particular to generative artificial intelligence, offering further tools to understand its potential, applications and implications.

What is Edvance

The courses, also called MOOCs (Massive Online Open Course), are accessible on the www.edvance.it platform via SPID or EduGain federated credentials for university students. Upon completion of the course, a digital open badge certificate is issued that can be uploaded on LinkedIn or included in the Curriculum. Edvance is a network coordinated by the Politecnico di Milano, financed by the MUR under the PNRR, which brings together 17 Italian universities and offers over 200 free online courses on strategic topics for innovation.
