Alef Aeronautics, a flying car start-up owned by SpaceX of Elon Musk, said it had reached 2,850 pre-orders for its futuristic electric vertical take-off and landing vehicle (eVTOL).
According to Cnbc, the San Mateo, California-based company reports that the number of pre-orders has recently reached a new record high after having previously reached 2,500 orders for its two-seater, the Alef Model A. Customers can access pre-orders for the Model A online by paying a $150 deposit for the vehicle. And there is no strings attached: at any time the 'buyer' can cancel the order by taking back the $150.
Alef expects to charge customers $300,000 for the Model A when it is available on the market. Thus, reasoning from the 2,850 orders, the total value of its order book currently exceeds $850 million. The company is, however, working separately on a four-seater sedan, the Model Z, which is scheduled to be launched by 2035 at the more affordable price of $35,000, the same as the cheapest electric vehicles.
The company's Model A, unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in a reduced size, resembles a real car, with a mesh shell on the inside protecting the rotors through which air flows through the body of the vehicle.
