'Remove my father's name from the Teatro Condominio'. Alessandro Gassman, Vittorio's son, is categorical in his message to the mayor of Gallarate (Varese) Andrea Cassani (Lega) two days after the Remigration summit, the meeting of the European ultra-right, with xenophobic contents and a proposal of extreme measures to avoid "ethnic substitution in Europe", which took place on Saturday 17 May 2025 in Gallarate in the theatre in question named after Vittorio Gassman.
Alessandro Gassmann posted a message on Instagram: 'Dear Mayor, I read that at the theatre named after my father in your town, the international meeting of European far-right parties (neo-fascists and Nazis) took place. If your intentions are to continue hosting, in a place of culture, demonstrations with racist and illiberal slogans, I ask you to remove my father's name from the aforementioned theatre. My father had relatives deported and killed by the Nazi-Fascists. Thank you'.
The message arrives at the same time as the controversy erupted after the theatre was granted to the ultra-right (an initial location in Somma Lombardo, also in the Varese area, was cancelled because the chosen hotel had not confirmed the booking) both on the political and civil society fronts: some Gallarate businesses chose to remain closed until the end of the Remigration summit, explaining, with signs posted on their windows or social media posts, that 'we do not intend to serve the fasces'.
The Gallarate mayor's reply: 'Gassman father would not censor others' ideas'
.Vittorio Gassman, 'an eclectic man of culture, was never afraid to express his political affiliation' and 'like all people of value, who have made the history of our country, he would probably not have fought the ideas of others with aprioristic censorship but with the strength of more convincing ideas'.
Gallarate's Leghist mayor Cassani replied to Alessandro Gassman as follows.
