Alibaba plans to expand its data centres in the EU and the Middle East
In Europe, the Chinese giant plans to ‘create the first cloud regions’ in Turkey, Finland and the Netherlands
Alibaba has announced plans to expand its data centres overseas, targeting European and Middle Eastern markets, ‘creating its first cloud regions’ in Turkey, Finland and the Netherlands, whilst also expanding its network of data centres in Malaysia, Germany, the United Arab Emirates, France and Hong Kong over the next 12 months.
The announcement comes just a few days after summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Donald Trump in Washington. Alibaba’s CEO Eddie Wu announced, during the company’s annual conference in Hangzhou, its headquarters, that Alibaba plans to train a particularly powerful artificial intelligence model with between five and ten trillion parameters, which would make it several times larger than the largest model currently in use in China. Alibaba is aiming for a global data centre capacity of over 20 gigawatts by 2032, he added.
