"The Istat data on wages certify a return of 8 per cent lower than in January 2021, despite a trend increase of 4 per cent. We know that action is needed and that is why we will be presenting our own wage bill in the coming days. An issue that for the League is a priority and at the heart of the party's political action, which just less than a month ago at the Congress in Florence approved the motion on wages, with concrete proposals to adjust them to inflation and stimulate the renewal of national contracts. As the League, we are working to urgently address this issue, with the aim of supporting Italian workers and families and giving them greater economic certainty. We will bring our proposals to Parliament to ensure adequate, fair and transparent wages. Addressing the issue of low wages with ideological positions is not the right path'. This was stated by Labour Undersecretary Claudio Durigon and Lega Lega deputy Tiziana Nisini, head of the party's labour department. The Lega's next parliamentary battle seems to be on wages.
The wage motion tabled at the congress
At the centre of the Lega Nord congress at the beginning of April was the issue of work and a proposal that is bound to cause discussion: an automatic increase of 2% per year for salaries and pensions, linked to cost-of-living trends.
During the congress, the labour issue proved to be central. The League's proposal aims at 'pegging' salaries and pensions to cost-of-living increases. An initiative that, according to Matteo Salvini's explanation, would serve to protect citizens' purchasing power against inflation, utility bills, and rising prices of basic necessities.
Automatic mechanism
.The motion, tabled by Claudio Durigon, Undersecretary for Labour, provides for an automatic mechanism for salary and pension increases linked to consumer price trends calculated by ISTAT. The upper limit for the adjustment is 2 per cent per year. The 'standard' percentage would be rediscussed every three years.
The stated aim is to combat contractual dumping, unfair competition, tax evasion and undeclared work. In practice, an alternative route to the legal minimum wage, deemed 'inefficient' by the League, is proposed.
