The long-distance clash within the majority on the sacrifices to be demanded from the banks in order to acquire resources for the next manoeuvre continues. On one side the League. 'In view of the next manoeuvre, the big banks will be able to generate a contribution of 5 billion euros to support families, artisans, traders and businesses,' was the calculation of the Carrocci0 economic group, which Matteo Salvini consulted to formalise a proposal inspired by what has been successfully experimented for years in some European countries. On the other Forza Italia, which rejected the proposal, stressing that the concept of extra-profit is, in the words of leader Antonio Tajani, 'stuff of the Soviet Union'.

In the last few hours, qualified sources in the majority have clarified that the objective being looked at, in the context of the negotiations between the government and the banks for a hypothetical contribution in view of the next budget law, is to raise 2.5-3 billion. The same sources explained that everything will in any case be decided together with the banks, "very calmly," in the talks that are underway and will continue in the coming weeks.

Lega, for banks 130 billion profit, contribution needed

Close by, the League relaunched. In a note, it recalled that 'in the three years of our government, the banks have recorded profits of around 130 billion euro, quadrupling (!!) their value on the stock exchange. In recent years, the large institutions have decided on a cost-cutting policy, with the closure of thousands of branches and staff cutbacks, while neither the interest paid to savers who have money tied up in their current accounts, nor the loans granted to families and businesses have increased significantly. This is why we consider it reasonable,' the document reads, 'to ask the big banks for a contribution from the enormous earnings from interest and commissions'.

Tajani: dialogue with banks to get results

"With banks you have to dialogue: the principle of dialogue brings results. If I harass the banks, I scare the markets, nobody wants to come and invest anymore. We want dialogue to achieve results, not to frighten public opinion and investors,' said Tajani, during his closing speech at the party festival in Telese Terme, reiterating that 'extra profit does not exist'.

Resources for fiscal peace

Already in the past few days Salvini had said: the resources for the fiscal peace can be found by 'asking for a contribution from the banks at a time when Italians are tightening their belts. Last year the banks earned EUR 46 billion, like three budget laws, and part of these huge gains come from the interest that the banks do not give to those who have money in their current accounts. If the banks, instead of earning 46 billion, earn 42 billion at the end of the year and that money goes to families and businesses in difficulty,' Salvini explained, 'the banks will also be overjoyed.

Tajani's stop: stuff of the Soviet Union

"Threatening extra-profits is useless. As long as Forza Italia is in government, there will never be taxes on extra-profits. This I want to say very clearly. Prime Minister Meloni in fact said 'let's discuss' but the threat of taxes is unacceptable,' Tajani said on Saturday 28 September, replying to the League from the party's party party party in Telese Terme (Bn). 'I am absolutely against taxes on extra profits, it is Soviet Union stuff. Banks can make a contribution but there is no concept of extra profits, there is no legal basis. Banks can and must do their duty but extra profit is something that does not exist, they have to explain to me what it is,' Tajani thundered.

Meloni: confrontation with banks

On the question of the possible contribution of the banks in the manoeuvre 'we must not exclude any hypothesis, but we could, for example, initiate a positive confrontation with the banking system as we did last year,' said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, speaking to journalists in New York. "My approach is not that we have to punish anyone, we have to seek allies for the big priorities we want for this nation," so the premier.

Giorgetti: dutiful contribution

"If we look at the balance sheets of the last five years, we see that there are sectors, companies, situations, that have suffered heavily from the crisis and the effects of, for example, the cost of energy, and there are sectors that instead, due to the skill of the entrepreneurs who work in them, such as the banking sector, have made stratospheric profits," is the position of the Minister of the Economy, Giancarlo Giorgetti: "Now in a situation like this, I believe that in a systemic logic, and without bullying anyone, however, it is only fair that in some way everyone makes a contribution."
