Mountaineering tragedy: 9 dead in three days, latest incident on Pasubio
Three deaths were reported across the Alps on Friday, four on Saturday and two on Sunday
Two mountaineers have died on the Vicenza side of Monte Pasubio, and a third was rescued by helicopter whilst still roped to the rock face. The tragedy occurred on Sunday 14 June shortly before midday, in the area of Sojo d’Uderle, a spot well-known to hikers but featuring exposed and challenging sections. According to initial reports, a 26-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman lost their lives after falling approximately 100 metres. The alarm was raised shortly after the incident, but by the time the rescue teams arrived, there was nothing that could be done for either of them. Due to the difficult weather conditions and fog, the Trento helicopter was deployed to the scene
The tragic three-day period in the Alps continues. Four fatalities were recorded on Saturday on the peaks of the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc. A mountaineer died on the Matterhorn: the body was transported to Cervinia. Identification procedures are being carried out by the Guardia di Finanza mountain rescue service. The recovery of his climbing partner, who was unharmed, is currently underway.
A second climber has died on the Brenva Glacier on Mont Blanc. The body – according to the Mountain Rescue Service – has been transported to Courmayeur. The identification process is being handled by the Mountain Rescue Service of the Guardia di Finanza.
Meanwhile, two climbers have died on Mont Blanc, on the Kuffner Ridge at Mont Maudit on the French side. The rescue operation is being managed by the French emergency services. The total number of mountain fatalities over the past 24 hours, including the three climbers from Trentino who died on Mont Blanc, now stands at seven.
