Jasmine Paolini also in the final in Cincinnati

Jasmine Paolini's liberating scream at the end of her match against Veronika Kudermetova heralded the brightest of smiles for the final she had just won in Cincinnati after a battle lasting more than two hours: 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 was the result against the Russian (36th in the rankings and winner of the women's doubles at Wimbledon). The Tuscan started off well, closing out the first set in just 28 minutes - thanks to a break at 4-3 in her own favour - and leading 5-3 in the second. But at this point came the unexpected setback: a match that was flowing along accompanied by Jasmine's concreteness and punctuated by several errors on the part of her opponent, reopened with a surprising comeback. Which Kudermetova finalised in a tiebreak in which she left only two points to the Italian. Paolini, however, was good at forgetting that set that faded in that way, she started again from scratch, with patience, resisted her opponent's assault by neutralising three break points and closed the accounts 6-3. An important result in a Masters 1000 that also gives her confidence in view of the Us Open, after the disappointments of Paris (where she went out in the eighth, wasting three match points with Svitolina) and Wimbledon (out in the second round).

She will face Iga Swiatek in the final today (at midnight), world number 3 and in great form (she has just triumphed at Wimbledon). The record says 5-0 for the Polish player: Jasmine will be able to play with ease, free of the weight of expectations.

Over night, Lorenzo Musetti and Lorenzo Sonego did not make it in the final of the doubles against Croatian Metkic and American Ram: they succumbed at the match tiebreak, after winning the first set and suffering the comeback of their opponents, at the end of a beautiful match. The appointment, now, is for tonight at 9pm, with the Sinner-Alcaraz challenge.
