As part of the European Commission's Mobility Action Awards 2025 organised for the European Mobility Week, the sustainable mobility model for tourists offered by the 'South Tyrol guest pass' project was honoured by the European Commission. A practical and convenient model that allows visitors staying in hotels, B&Bs and other accommodation facilities in the Autonomous Province to use public transport such as buses, trains and cable cars. In other words, a best practice at European level to be replicated, especially if the visitor experience is to be improved because it is no longer necessary to go searching for a ticket or to consult fares.
The South Tyrolean Guest Pass is financed through a mobility contribution per guest and overnight stay and among other things it also improves the rate of public transport use. Revenues from the Guest Pass have grown to about 20 million euros per year, which is about one third of all ticket revenues from public transport in South Tyrol. Resources then reinvested in the provincial mobility system to improve and expand the bus and train offer. "This award shows that the path taken by South Tyrol in sustainable mobility is the right one," said Daniel Alfreider, provincial councillor for mobility after the award ceremony. We believed in it from the beginning, it was hard work by many people. To think that out of more than 900 projects that were submitted to the European Commission, this project took first place makes us happy. Public transport as part of the tourism offer: this will really change the mobility experience in our region. My special thanks go to the project partners, MOKO, IDM Südtirol, HGV and STA, and to all the tourism organisations and companies that helped turn this vision into a concrete reality.
The South Tyrol Guest Pass was chosen from around 960 mobility projects from all over Europe and awarded for its innovative model that directly integrates public mobility into the tourist experience, with an ecological twist. The initiative of the Autonomous Province of Bozen/Bolzano not only makes life easier for tourists, but also reduces private road traffic, which has an impact on traffic, the environment and air quality. Furthermore, it is one of the first systems in Europe in which the entire public mobility offer of a province is integrated into the tourism product.
