Amazon and FedEx, the e-commerce and transportation giant, are trying to re-engage. The Wall Street Journal reports that the two companies have been in talks for the past year about working together again, with the possibility of FedEx delivering goods returned to Amazon by customers to FedEx shops.
Does the postman always ring twice?
According to the financial newspaper, the two companies worked on the agreement last year, when FedEx was looking to increase parcel volumes amidst a downturn in the industry, and Amazon was aiming to improve its customers' experience in returning items. In 2019, the partnership between the two companies for parcel delivery was discontinued. Amazon then relied on the service of Ups and other operators.
The problem of returns
.The two parties have not reached an agreement, but the news comes as FedEx has been trying to increase parcel volumes amid a downturn in the industry and Amazon needs to improve its customers' experience in returning items.
The talks with FedEx took place last spring, around the same time that Amazon introduced a fee for some customers who bring their returns to UPS shops.
In October, UPS signed a $465 million deal to buy Happy Returns, which has partnerships with several retailers and thousands of return delivery sites in its network. The deal allowed UPS to reduce its exposure to Amazon and handle returns from other online retailers.
