Amazon cuts 16,000 jobs globally
The announcement comes after 14,000 redundancies in recent months: the global e-commerce giant has 1.5 million employees worldwide
Key points
Amazon said it will cut 16,000 jobs worldwide in the second major round of layoffs at the company in three months, as it restructures to compensate for pandemic-era over-hiring and expands adoption of artificial intelligence tools.
Reuters, had reported last week that Amazon was planning a second round of job cuts as part of a broader goal to reduce some 30,000 corporate roles, with the layoffs expected to hit workers in Amazon Web Services, retail, Prime Video and human resources departments.
An additional job cut
The layoffs come a few months after the company announced that it wouldcut 14,000 positions. At the time, Amazon indicated that further cuts could come in 2026, as it had found "additional positions where levels could be removed".
Managers were given the option to make the cuts in October or wait until the New Year, said the sources, who requested anonymity to discuss an internal matter.
The cuts, made in shifts at the turn of the holiday season and Amazon's peak period, echo the redundancies the company made between the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023, which affected some 27,000 people.
