Amazon suspends drone delivery project in Abruzzo. Enac: 'Unexpected news'
According to Enac, the Seattle-based company chose to launch and apply for certification as an operator in another EU Member State
Amazon Prime Air's Amazon Prime Air project of "Drone Delivery" launched in Italy, at San Salvo, in Abruzzo, and the related LUC (Light UAS Operator Certificate) operator certification, has recently received official communication from Amazon. This was announced in a press release.
The Authority, the note continues, has taken note of the "unexpected news from Amazon that, while confirming an undisputed appreciation for the fruitful work carried out together with Enac, for reasons of company policy and as a consequence of the recent financial events that have involved the Group, has decided to launch commercial operations and request certification as an operator in another EU Member State".
Despite the suspension of the project, the 'U-Space San Salvo' will be operational from 1 January 2026: the first in Europe. This is a portion of airspace in which "the integration between manned and remotely piloted flights will be achieved, an essential element to ensure the full and safe operation of unmanned aircraft, enabling experimental activities and emergency operations".
