The go-ahead has been given for the multi-year cooperation agreement between Confindustria nautica (the Italian Boating Industry Confederation) and the 38th America's Cup, for the support of the Italian boating industry in the organisation of the 2027 Naples event. The memorandum of understanding was signed during the Genoa Boat Show by Grant Dalton, ceo of the America's cup event and Emirates team New Zealand (which holds the cup), and by Piero Formenti, president of the association of boat and yacht builders.
For the first time in 164 years, the sailing competition is being held in Italy. "There are two reasons," Dalton explained, "why we chose Naples. The first is the sailing conditions, which are perfect especially in spring and summer. The second is the passion we found in Naples, which we have already experienced in other regattas".
Formenti: 'So we have total representation of the tricolour nautical industry'
.'This agreement,' Formenti explained, 'allows us to provide support for everything the America's Cup event will need, and also to give protection to the organisation from any strange meddling. For example, a strange consortium has come into being, which boasts a thousand registered companies and does not have a single one; it only has a website, and tries to take money away from companies, making them register, boasting who knows what kind of contacts with New Zealand or with the America's Cup. Having us the complete, total representation of the Italian nautical industry, in all its supply chain, we can guarantee America's cup events that they have relations with those who actually exist'.
For Formenti, the guarantee of Confindustria nautica will also apply to Italian companies that want to work with the organisers, "to be protected from being contacted by braggarts. As for the risk of organised crime infiltrating the Luis Vuitton Cup, this risk is always there, anywhere in the world and in Italy, but I believe we are well protected. We have a state and police apparatus that will have no problem controlling all this'.
Zangrillo: "The regatta in Naples gives hope for the rebirth of Bagnoli"
The Genoa Boat Show, stressed the Minister for Public Administration, Paolo Zangrillo, 'is a symbol of Italian history, ingenuity and excellence. It is a pride for my hometown and for the whole country. For the first time in history, the oldest and most prestigious sailing trophy in the world, the America's Cup, will be in Naples. An extraordinary opportunity for our country and for the Italian companies that lead the nautical world.
