America’s Cup: Luna Rossa strengthens its partnership with Siemens
The aim is to improve the boat’s performance in terms of digital engineering and data management
Wind and digital innovation. Ahead of the 38th America’s Cup, Luna Rossa – the challenger with the most appearances in the competition – has expanded its partnership with Siemens in the field of digital engineering, ahead of the next competition to be held in Naples in 2027.
“The partnership – as emphasised by Luna Rossa’s headquarters, whose team was founded in 1997 by Patrizio Bertelli to compete in the 30th edition in 2000, – will support the team in managing increasingly complex engineering workflows and in speeding up decision-making processes in the areas of simulation, structures, systems and technical development.”
From data management to modelling
The project will be carried out through the adoption and use of the systems provided by the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio. In this way, Luna ‘Rossa’ will be able to link key areas such as data management, requirements traceability, advanced simulation, system modelling and structural optimisation within a more integrated digital engineering environment.
According to Gilberto Nobili, Technology & Operations Director at Luna Rossa, “developing a competitive yacht means managing the complexity of multiple engineering disciplines, whilst continuously refining performance”. “By expanding our collaboration with Siemens and adopting a broader range of technologies to support innovation,” he adds, “we can strengthen the foundations of our digital engineering and support the team as they prepare for the next America’s Cup.”
Identifying technical solutions
That’s not all. Thanks to this collaboration, the team will be able to ‘explore and identify’ technical solutions ‘at an earlier stage, improve the link between simulation and engineering data, and support faster and more informed development decisions’, whilst preparations for the next America’s Cup campaign continue. This is an important step for Luna Rossa, which, since its foundation, has taken part in six editions of the event, winning the Challenger Selection Series twice (the Louis Vuitton Cup in 2000 and the Prada Cup in 2021) and reaching the finals in 2007, 2013 and 2024.
