How immersive reality (with AI) is changing training

For years, digital technology has taken training out of the classroom, making content accessible at any time and on any device; now, the next stage in the evolution driven by new technologies no longer concerns the place but the way in which we learn. Extended reality, combined with artificial intelligence and three-dimensional simulations, is introducing an experiential element into corporate learning processes that traditional e-learning struggles to replicate.
The issue is not merely a technological one, as confirmed by the World Economic Forum’s projections, which suggest that – by 2030 – 39 per cent of the skills required in the workplace will be different from those needed today: for businesses, this means having to accelerate upskilling and reskilling and, above all, finding more effective ways to transform knowledge into practical skills. It is within this context that Extended Learning comes into its own, a model that uses immersive environments to transform training from a predominantly theoretical process into a hands-on experience, adding an ‘operational’ dimension that becomes particularly valuable when practising in the real world is costly, risky or simply difficult to organise. Using a headset, or even a PC or smartphone, employees can find themselves inside a factory, an office or a simulated operational scenario, make decisions, interact and see the effects of their actions.
For companies and HR managers, the priority now is to understand where this technology actually adds value and where, on the other hand, traditional training methods remain more effective. To find out, we asked Vittorio Zingales, CEO and Founder of XMetaReal, an Italian company specialising in immersive reality solutions, to explain what is changing and what feedback has been received from the first projects implemented within organisations.
Why should extended reality represent a paradigm shift rather than simply a technological evolution?
With the use of extended reality, the concept of learning shifts from the transmission of knowledge to direct experience, enabling us to ‘do’ rather than merely ‘know’, in safe and repeatable environments. This is the major difference compared with what we are used to today, and this is why XR represents a paradigm shift.
