José Alberto Suarez, chairman of Telemundo, was among those killed in a helicopter crash in Kenya
Seven people, including a former minister and an Italian-Ecuadorian businessman, lost their lives in a plane crash near Mount Ololokwe, as confirmed by the Kenyan authorities
José Alberto Suárez, chairman and general manager of the Telemundo stations in Orlando, Tampa and Fort Myers-Naples (Florida), is also among those killed in yesterday’s helicopter crash in Kenya.
Suárez was 55 years old and his death has been confirmed by NBCUniversal, the owner of the local broadcasters he managed. According to NBC Miami, Suárez was in fact one of four American citizens killed in the crash in Samburu County, in the north-east of the African country.
All seven people on board, including the pilot, were killed.
Suárez had worked for NBCUniversal for over twenty years, holding leadership roles at stations in San Antonio, Sacramento, Fresno, Salt Lake City and Las Vegas.
More recently, he was in charge of Telemundo 31 (Orlando), Telemundo 49 (Tampa) and Telemundo Fort Myers-Naples. Before becoming general manager, he had served as director of creative services and programming for WTVJ, the NBC affiliate in Miami. He had previously held digital roles at NBC 6 Miami and Telemundo 51. Before joining NBCU, he had worked as a journalist and presenter in Florida, Ohio and Texas. He had been a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists since 1998. Throughout his career, he had received numerous awards.
