Dear Director,
We all live in a difficult and contradictory time in which the certainties on which we have built our recent history are being put under tension by new demands. The Eurocentric conception, which saw in the West and its criteria for defining reality the task of defining and understanding the 'other worlds' is being challenged by new protagonists who aspire to redesign world geopolitics.
And we live in a new dimension, in which each region is both centre and periphery at the same time. Is Europe still the heart of this new polycentric world? In a set-up in which current political trends challenge globalisation and the world status quo, what position should Europe - the holder of enormous economic and social potential - take vis-à-vis the Sino-US duopoly? Will we take refuge in isolationism or will we be able to make choices that give it the possibility to maintain a role of influence for the economy and for economic and social sustainability?
Questions that are distant only in appearance, which each of us declines in different dimensions, linked to our own vision and commitment.
But of course - and I would like to say in accordance with what the Sun has accustomed us to - the theme of this year's Festival is highly topical and central to a reflection that can go beyond backyard issues and reason together with the best minds.
