The centre-left party has announced the result of the leadership contest to replace outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer; Burnham was the only candidate in the running. Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester, has been regarded as the Prime Minister-designate for several weeks now.

In his first speech following today’s formal victory, Burnham stated that he would be a business-friendly Prime Minister. “Make no mistake: I will be a business-friendly Labour leader, just as I was a business-friendly mayor of Greater Manchester,” he said, speaking about the revival of pubs, shops and small local businesses.
