Angelini technologies joins LAB0 and aims to robotise parcel loading and unloading logistics
The Italian company acquired a stake in the American start-up to produce on a large scale a robotic system for handling parcels, which today is mainly done manually
Angelini Technologies enters the American start-up LAB0, in which it has acquired a minority stake. With the entry of the Angelini Industries Group company, active in industrial automation and robotics for logistics through its subsidiary Fameccanica, LAB0 will be able to focus on the large-scale industrialisation of its robotic system for the autonomous handling of materials, focused on the automated loading and unloading of packages from containers and trucks. In fact, the investment will allow Angelini Technologies to further accelerate the evolution of the technological solutions that the company proposes for automation in the logistics sector, and will enable the Italian-American start-up to move from a prototyping phase to one of industrial-scale production.
"Technology, robotics and industrial automation are, together with healthcare, a strategic area for the expansion and development of our Group's activities," explains Sergio Marullo di Condojanni, CEO of Angelini Industries. "The investment in Lab0 is part of Angelini Technologies' international expansion path, which aims at intercepting high-tech solutions that are candidates to become innovative products on the market," he adds, "with the goal of expanding our presence in the sector of robotics applied to logistics and at the same time consolidating our leadership in that of industrial machines for the production of consumer goods.
In detail, LAB0's patented technology is designed to revolutionise one of the key processes in global logistics, which today is mainly managed by manual labour. This is a market that is estimated to be worth $8 billion by 2030 and will increasingly combine artificial intelligence with advanced robotics, vision systems and sensor technology. Thanks to proprietary software that synchronises each stage of the workflow, the system is able to fully automate the complex operations of loading and unloading parcels from trucks and containers, activities that today often expose workers to hazardous conditions.
As stated by Luigi De Vito, CEO of Angelini Technologies, 'this operation allows us to enter with a proprietary technology into a crucial segment of the logistics chain whose needs are not adequately met. The project that we will carry out with Lab0 is strategically placed in the area of robotics that we have developed in recent years and, thanks to the integration of the skills and technologies that this company brings to us, we will be able to further accelerate the development of innovative solutions for intralogistics, thus strengthening our market penetration'. And now, adds David McCalib, founder of LAB0, "the partnership with Angelini Technologies allows us to move beyond innovation towards true large-scale industrialisation. Their experience in building and developing complex automation systems globally gives us a clear path from disruptive technological innovation to its reliable large-scale deployment'.
The entry into LAB0 will consolidate the presence of the group led by Marullo di Condojanni in the United States, where Angelini Technologies will open a new office in Boston in which 25 professionals including mechanical engineers, computer engineers, and specialists in advanced robotics will be progressively employed within the next two years. The new headquarters will also house a laboratory to conduct tests on robotic systems used in logistics.
