Ansaldo completes two modernisation works on power plant in Slovenia
Renewed water treatment and flue gas compressors in Krško. New contract signed for fire-fighting systems
Ansaldo Nucleare has completed two modernisation projects at the Krško nuclear power plant, operated by Nek (Nuklearna Elektrarna Krško) in Slovenia. These are the upgrade of the water treatment system and the replacement of the flue gas compressor package. In both projects, the company acted as main contractor, managing the engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning activities. In February 2026, Nek also awarded the Italian company a new contract to modernise the plant's fire protection system, with completion scheduled for 2027.
As far as water is concerned, the work that has just been completed, explain Ansaldo, 'improves operational flexibility and automates the production of demineralised water to feed the reactor. The new configuration includes more treatment lines and a modern distributed control system, which allows better monitoring and largely automated operation'. As for the second upgrade, the project 'involved the replacement of two flue gas compressors with new units. Ansaldo's expertise in Asme certification (for pressure equipment, ndr) and US-EU nuclear standards supported the design and supply of the associated heat exchangers. Due to limited space in the plant, the compressors were transported disassembled and reassembled on site.
These activities, says Daniela Gentile, CEO of Ansaldo Nuclear, 'strengthen our long-standing cooperation with Nek. By managing complex modernisation projects under challenging conditions, we support the Slovenian company in maintaining the highest standards of safety, efficiency and operational reliability. Slovenia is a strategic energy partner: in 2025, Italy imported around 5 terawatt-hours of electricity from the country, which is about 10 per cent of its total imports, demonstrating its relevant role for the Italian energy system."
