Anthropic: we need to slow down AI development; greater oversight is required
CEO Amodei wrote this. OpenAI is also set to slow down
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - Anthropic’s CEO, Dario Amodei, has called for a slowdown in the pace of artificial intelligence development, emphasising the need for greater control over its evolution and also referring to the incident that occurred at OpenAI in July. “We must slow down the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models. Progress will still seem rapid, and we will need to make wise use of the time we gain,” the entrepreneur wrote on his personal website.
The warning came just a few days after Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon announced his intention to leave the Californian start-up. Coxon accused the company of downplaying the risk that the development of AI could pose to humanity. Furthermore, it emerged yesterday that OpenAI is also considering slowing down the pace of development of its most advanced artificial intelligence systems, in the face of growing concerns about the risks associated with controlling them. According to reports, during an internal company meeting, the chief executive, Sam Altman, suggested that OpenAI might coordinate with other developers in the sector to reduce the pace of development.
