An appeal sentence was handed down in Turin in the case of Mario Roggero, the jeweller who in Grinzane Cavour (Cuneo) killed two robbers in April 2021 and wounded a third by chasing the thugs out of the shop, with the sentence reduced from 17 to 14 years and 9 months.
The judges retired to the council chamber after the discussion by defence lawyer Stefano Marcolini: no reply from the prosecutor. The defendant himself spoke in the courtroom before his lawyer. Roggero made spontaneous statements, as he had already done in the first trial in Asti, at the end of which he was sentenced to 17 years in prison.
"I acted in self-defence, I wanted to save my wife and avert the risk that, knowing they were seen, they would return to the shop and kill us. I just wanted to protect my family," said the jeweller.
In particular, Roggero stated that he shot because it appeared to him that one of the ra
pinators, Andrea Spinelli, was pointing the weapon at him: it would later be discovered that it was a toy gun.
