In order to involve a larger number of female researchers and to be more compatible with other scholarships that candidates may be awarded, since last year the scholarship has become a Prize. This opening is intended to once again send out a strong signal: concrete support for young female researchers who can, thanks to the award, pursue their research activities and study projects independently of other funding received.

Six prizes worth EUR 20,000 each will be awarded in the fields of life sciences, environmental sciences, mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering and technology for the 2025 edition.

Created in 1998 at the initiative of L'Oréal and Unesco, 'For Women in Science' was the first international prize dedicated to women scientists. Today, it is part of a vast programme focused on promoting scientific vocation at an international level and aimed at recognising the work of female researchers from all over the world. Since its inception, the programme has chosen to reward five female candidates, one from each of the five continents, with a contribution of USD 100,000. This commitment on a global scale has been reinforced by the creation of scholarships and today of Awards. Since 1998, as many as 3,900 female researchers in over 110 countries have been supported in their careers. In Italy, the initiative is now in its 23rd year. From 2002 to 2023, it awarded a total of 112 scholarships. Starting with the 22nd edition, in agreement with the jury, the six scholarships awarded each year, worth 20,000 euro each, have become full-fledged prizes for a total of 118 female researchers awarded in the twenty-two-year history of the Italian edition of the programme.
