Arera: gas bills up 6.9 per cent in August for vulnerable customers
(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) - In August 2026, wholesale prices rose sharply, and the total cost for the typical consumer increased by 6.9 per cent compared with the previous month to 143.72 euro cents per cubic metre. This is according to ARERA data on the cost of the gas raw material under the Gas Vulnerability Protection Scheme, which shows that for the approximately 2.3 million customers still on the Scheme, the price of the gas raw material alone (CMEM,m) stands at 64.15 euros/MWh. The component of the gas price covering procurement costs, applied only to customers in the scheme, is updated by ARERA as the monthly average of the price on the Italian wholesale market (the PSV day-ahead) and published within the first two working days of the month following the reference month. Specifically, the cost of natural gas is 71.80 cents (equivalent to 49.96% of the total bill) for the supply of natural gas and related activities, and 5.83 cents (4.06 per cent of the total bill) for retail sales. The cost of transmission and meter management amounts to 24.19 cents (16.83 per cent of the total bill) for distribution, metering, transmission, distribution equalisation and quality services. The cost of system charges amounts to 4.98 cents (3.46 per cent of the total bill) for general system charges, whilst taxes amount to 36.92 cents (25.69 per cent of the total bill).
