From 8 to 14 July the appointment is renewed with the Art Nouveau Week, the European event dedicated to the Art Nouveau style and the arts of the early 20th century. Now in its seventh edition, it is promoted by Italia Liberty with a scientific and honorary committee. The 2025 theme is the Butterfly, emblem of transformation.

It will be a week full of appointments and opportunities to explore an elegant, fairy-tale and surprisingly topical world: online conferences on architecture, decorative arts, fashion, illustration, cuisine and literature are scheduled, with 14 meetings by subject matter expert and lecturer Andrea Speziali, curator of the event programme, two a day throughout the week.

Discovering Art Nouveau Italy: 100 itineraries from north to south

The seventh edition of Art Nouveau Week proposes a unique journey among the treasures of Italian Art Nouveau (here is the entire programme of initiatives), with a rich calendar of over 100 guided tours, themed walks, extraordinary openings and family stories revealing the modernist soul of our country, from 6 to 14 July 2025. The Basilicata region surprises with Melfi, where the owners of Palazzo Pastore - a rare example of Lucanian Art Nouveau - welcome visitors on a fascinating tour that also includes the Farmacia Carlucci and historic villas in the city.

In Abruzzo, from Pescara to Sulmona, from L'Aquila to Giulianova, wrought iron details, decorated cements and floral architecture are rediscovered. In Calabria, Reggio opens the doors of its palaces between deco and eclecticism, with urban tours dedicated to residences designed by Gino Zani. Naples and its hillside districts (Vomero, Chiaia, Petraio) are revealed with itineraries among monumental staircases, panoramas and period villas.

In Emilia-Romagna, from Bologna to Riccione, each city offers walks through the Belle Époque, as in Faenza, Ferrara and Gambettola, up to itineraries curated by private collectors such as Roberto Parenti in Sogliano al Rubicone. In Friuli Venezia Giulia, the hidden elegance of Trieste is recounted in a walk among Art Nouveau houses hidden among 19th-century buildings.

Rome opens up places that are usually inaccessible such as Villino Ximenes, the Boncompagni Ludovisi Museum and the Casina delle Civette at Villa Torlonia, while evening walks through the Prati, Ludovisi and Coppedè neighbourhoods bring back the fairytale face of the early 20th century capital. Liguria offers visits to the landmarks of coastal Art Nouveau: from Genoa to Imperia, from La Spezia to Savona and Chiavari, admire villas, stained-glass windows and museums such as Villa Rosa and the MACI in Villa Faravelli.

Lombardy is the 'Italian Art Nouveau capital', with events in 10 cities: from Giuseppe Sommaruga's masterpieces in Milan and Varese, to the villas of Monza, Brescia and Lodi, and the workers' village of Crespi d'Adda. In Cernobbio, it opens with a DJ set inspired by the flight of butterflies at Villa Bernasconi. The Marche participate with a tour in Pesaro among villas and Molaroni ceramics.

In Molise, Campobasso recounts its 20th-century transformation with examples from the Tucci workshop and architect Guerriero. The Piedmont, second only to Lombardy for style diffusion, presents a major event in Stresa with exhibitions, shows and free visits. Turin unveils iconic districts such as Cit Turin, Crocetta and San Donato.

In Puglia, Bari presents itineraries between Art Nouveau and Déco with exclusive stops, including frescoes attributed to Duilio Cambellotti. In Sardinia, Cagliari, Arborea and Sassari celebrate the female figure in Art Nouveau and early 20th century architecture. The Sicily stands out for its richness and variety: from Catania with Villa Ardizzone and Via XX Settembre, to the morning tour in Mondello with its Art Nouveau breakfast, to Palermo with Basile's architecture and the House Museum in Chiaramonte Gulfi.

The Tuscany offers itineraries in Lucca, Florence, Livorno and above all Viareggio, which pays homage to Galileo Chini and Belluomini with afternoon and evening waterfront tours. In Umbria, Foligno and Perugia pay homage to the bourgeoisie that shaped the local Liberty style. The Veneto participates with Vicenza, Verona, Thiene and Venezia Lido, amidst villas, friezes and secret gardens.

Appointments also abroad

Abroad, special itineraries take the public off the usual routes. In Barcelona, guided tours of the Manzana de la Discordia, Casa Vicens and Palau Güell reveal Catalan Modernism. In Switzerland, free workshops on goldsmithing take place in Ascona, while Palma de Mallorca and Valencia open their doors to the jewels of Spanish Modernism.

The new official catalogue of Art Nouveau Week 2025 includes previously unpublished discoveries, recent restorations and an up-to-date worldwide census of more than 15,000 Art Nouveau buildings, the result of years of work by curator Andrea Speziali and the international network of scholars and enthusiasts. The coordinated image of the event features an illustration from Ver Sacrum with a reference to the 'Putnam Fadeless Dyes-Tints' advertising fan. The logo is inspired by the graphics of Eugène Grasset.
