Artificial intelligence: AMD to invest 5 billion in Anthropic
The agreement strengthens the partnership between AMD and Anthropic, boosting computing power to support the growth of artificial intelligence and compete with Nvidia
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has agreed to invest up to 5 billion dollars in Anthropic, strengthening the ties between the two companies and supporting the maker of Claude in its aim to meet the growing demand for AI.
Under the terms of the agreement announced on Wednesday – and first reported by the Wall Street Journal – Anthropic will purchase up to 2 gigawatts of AMD’s latest-generation chips, known as Instinct MI450, from the first half of 2027. A single gigawatt is enough to power up to 750,000 US homes simultaneously.
The deal is set to strengthen AMD’s position in its competition with industry leader Nvidia Corp. and provide Anthropic with the essential computing power. The AI developer has previously signed an agreement with Elon Musk’s SpaceXAI and has begun negotiations with Meta Platforms Inc. to boost its computing resources.
“This collaboration brings together Anthropic’s leadership in cutting-edge AI with the full power of AMD’s high-performance computing,” said Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, in a statement. “Together, we will accelerate the adoption of AI.”
Over the past year, leading AI developers such as Anthropic and OpenAI have entered into a series of agreements with chip manufacturers and cloud computing providers. The technology industry has argued that these agreements are necessary to support the unprecedented growth in the physical infrastructure required to train and run AI models.
