Professor Luciano Floridi, a Yale lecturer and one of the foremost experts on the ethical impact of new technologies, will preside over the commission charged with selecting the winning projects for the application of generative artificial intelligence to parliamentary work. This was announced by the Chamber of Deputies, reporting that Tiziana Catarci, professor of information processing systems at 'La Sapienza' University in Rome, Stefania Costantini, Professor of Computer Science at the University of L'Aquila, Andrea Renda, Professor of Digital Policy at the European Research Centre in Florence, Fabio Roli, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Genoa, Paola Vicard, Professor of Statistics at the University of Roma Tre.
'AI can only be an opportunity if it is placed at the service of man and at the service of democracies,' explained the President of the Chamber of Deputies Lorenzo Fontana. 'In this sense, the appointment of Professor Floridi, and that of the other members of the Commission, whom I thank, expresses an idea of development based on the person. A reflection that will be at the centre of important events, including the G7 of Parliaments, from 5 to 7 September in Verona'.
The selection of proposals by July
The selection of the proposals - some thirty in all, arrived following the opening of a specific expression of interest in recent months - and the awarding of prizes to the winning projects will take place by July. The score given to each proposal will be made up of a technical part, which will be taken care of by the technical-scientific commission appointed on the basis of principles defined in the expression of interest, and a qualitative part, expressed by the Supervisory Committee on the documentation activity. "I am deeply touched and honoured," commented Floridi, "by this appointment (I confess: unexpected), and I thank Dr. Anna Ascani, Vice-President of the Chamber of Deputies, and all my colleagues in the technical commission and the information service for the fruitful interactions and the trust they have placed in me. I hope I will not disappoint.
At Floridi also the Luiss Global Fellowship
Floridi, meanwhile, was awarded the Luiss Global Fellowship, the recognition destined for personalities who have distinguished themselves internationally in the fields of culture, art, economics and science. The award ceremony took place yesterday on campus with a speech by Floridi dedicated to the relationship between Ia and society in the contemporary era. Born in Rome, 60 years old, with a degree from La Sapienza University and doctorates from Warwick and Oxford, and a recent arrival at Yale, Floridi has crowned an academic career in which high-level scientific research has always gone hand in hand with a constant desire to innovate, in Italy as well as abroad. "In a world in which technology evolves at a faster rate than mankind," commented Paolo Boccardelli, neo-rector of Luiss, "the imperative, for universities and companies alike, must be to govern change, not undergo it.
