The potential of using data in mobility is still being developed, but there are already areas where the use of connection technologies can make a difference. One branch that already offers concrete and appreciable results is that of combating vehicle theft. According to LoJack, one of the companies most committed to this branch, 2023 saw a new growth in vehicle thefts in Italy (+7%). This figure emerges from the 'Dossier on Vehicle Thefts 2024', drawn up by LoJack Italia, which recently presented its new range of systems that raise the guard level on vehicles at risk and facilitate their recovery.
Targa Telematics is also moving in this direction, also thanks to the integration of Viasat. According to statistics obtained from the data collected by its network of control centres, during 2023 the incidence of theft within fleets with monitored vehicles less than 5 years old was reduced by more than 30% compared to the national average incidence. A significant result achieved thanks to the fleet implementation of Smart Vehicle Protector, the technological solution based on artificial intelligence and characterised by predictive features.
In addition to combating theft, telematics solutions are also dedicated to increasing road safety levels. In fact, road accidents also have negative consequences on business operations, in terms of reputation, property damage, productivity, injuries and legal costs. In order to protect drivers and avoid negative repercussions, companies have begun to adopt data-driven technology measures to combat unsafe driving and prevent accidents from occurring. To this end, Geotab offers a Safety Centre, available within the MyGeotab platform, that allows fleet and safety managers to identify and manage vehicle performance risks, gaining time to train drivers and focus on data-driven operational decisions, predictive accident analysis and comparisons with other peer fleets.
Then there are also those who have focused on an element that can be a risk factor and turned it into a safety tool: this is the smartphone, which, thanks to Octo, can be equipped with an intelligent app for the immediate detection of accidents, which does not require any interaction with the driver. The smartphone thus acts as a sensor for the detection of serious collisions that can automatically trigger a request for assistance. These are useful technologies that save lives, but much can and must still be done to have safer and safer roads, and telematics can be seen as a key tool to achieve this.
