We wonder whether 'the things', as Luca Mari calls chatbots, think, but we should ask ourselves how we think and what distinguishes us from them. We used to think that we were distinguished by physical strength, explains Alessandro Giordani, but from the wheel onwards we discovered that machines are stronger. So we thought we were distinguished by thought, perhaps expressed in words, spoken and then written down. Now there is something conversing with us, in our own language and expressing thoughts similar to our own: what is left for us? Responsibility, which is no small thing and was the theme of Dostoevsky's Artificial Intelligence, the first book published by Sole 24 Ore by the same authors. "Now chatbots choose logical paths, connect the dots, implement the advice of teachers and parents: think before you speak," says Mari. They are able to explain how they arrived at an answer. One step further is Plato's Artificial Intelligence, the second book in the series presented yesterday at the Diocesan Museum in Trento, to a room full of questions. All that remains is for us to study the AI to understand how it learns from us - and be aware and responsible for it - and how we can learn from the AI to improve ourselves, delegating everything that does not distinguish us to dedicate ourselves to everything that does: creativity and ethics. Moreover, we have a Pope named after the Lion of the Industrial Revolution because he knows that there is a new great economic, social, cultural and anthropological revolution, Giordani recalls. Plus he is a mathematician, Mari points out, which helps. Mari teaches at Liuc the science of measurement and Giordani at Cattolica logic and philosophy of science. They do research together. This is already a Platonic answer to the question: what is Ia?
