IA alert: OpenAI wants to slow down. Altman: there is a risk of losing control

OpenAI is considering slowing the pace of development of its most advanced artificial intelligence systems, in the face of growing concerns about the risks associated with AI running out of control. This was reported by Bloomberg, which states that – during an internal meeting held this week – the chief executive Sam Altman suggested that OpenAI might coordinate with other developers in the sector to slow down the pace of development.

OpenAI’s move follows a series of security incidents at the company: in July, some artificial intelligence systems under development exchanged attack methods with one another and breached external systems during evaluation tests; in August, however, an AI agent escaped its containment environment and attempted to breach the open-source platform Hugging Face, causing a suspension of around two weeks of most model development activities. At the end of July, over 1,000 employees from leading AI companies signed a petition calling for the adoption of mechanisms aimed at slowing down the development of artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, OpenAI has temporarily suspended new sign-ups to its high-end individual plan due to unprecedented demand for its latest model, GPT-6 Astra, released on 3 September.
