From cigarette butts the new ashtrays made under the banner of circular economy. The novelty concerns Cagliari airport where Smokers Points have been installed, ashtrays that allow cigarette butts to be recovered and start the process of transforming waste into new raw material. Carrying out the initiative in the Sardinian airport is RE-CIG®, a company from Civezzano in the province of Trento, founded in 2016, which deals with the collection of cigarette butts, carrying out a business model linked to the circular economy by which butts are transformed into a plastic material (cellulose acetate) that can be used to produce new objects.

Smokers Points are available to those who will use the spaces dedicated to smokers outside the arrivals and departures areas of Cagliari Airport, which can be identified thanks to the special signage provided by the management company Sogaer.

The collaboration between Sogaer and Re-Cig®

"The collaboration between the management company of the Cagliari airport and the RE-CIG® company," the management company says, "provides a collection and recycling service, which, thanks to a patented technology, makes it possible to obtain a plastic polymer. Known as RE-CIG®, the recycled cellulose acetate can be used to produce new objects: from eyeglass temples, to films, to synthetic fabrics, to industrial components'.

An important building block

An important piece in the mosaic of the circular economy aimed at reducing waste production through the use of sustainable and circular practices. Objectives at the heart of the agreement between Sogaer and Re-Cig. "For several years we have been committed to the adoption of cutting-edge practices and systems for the implementation of increasingly ambitious green policies because we believe that operating today in the air transport sector implies innovative and responsible choices - underlines Sogaer CEO Fabio Mereu -. Cagliari Airport adheres to the Airport Carbon Accreditation programme promoted by ACI Europe, from which it has obtained certification at the 'Reduction' level, and plans further growth actions. The collaboration with RE-CIG® for the recycling of cigarette butts testifies to the importance of environmental issues for our company, which has chosen, for the occasion, to customise the design of the ashtrays with the textures and colours of the Tree of Life, a mural by the artist Jorghe (Giorgio Casu) that welcomes passengers at the entrance of the air terminal, a concrete symbol of sustainability and rootedness in the territory".

The first experiment

The Sardinian airport, as Marco Fimognari, CEO of RE-CIG®, underlines, "is the first airport in Europe to adopt a complete and structured system for recycling cigarette butts based on our patented technology". And then the long-term objectives: "Thanks to the partnership with Sogaer, we are not only concretely combating the littering phenomenon," the CEO argues, "but we are also demonstrating how it is possible to transform a highly polluting waste into a useful resource, following the principles of the circular economy. This initiative is not only a concrete environmental action: it is also a powerful awareness-raising tool. Every passenger using a Smokers Point is confronted with the opportunity to make a difference with a simple but meaningful gesture. Promoting awareness on the issue of butts abandonment is crucial to generate a lasting cultural change, inside and outside airports".
